There seemed to be so many contradictions…For instance when her hearing or smell was absolutely superior, but then suddenly wasn’t working. It was jarring when Crystal felt more at ease and laughed any time one of the guys made sexist and objectifying jokes, when her inner dialogue said she’s used to being stared at like a piece of meat, indicating she knows she’s being objectified. Then a random line thrown in about how she thinks of herself as average? But on the next page she knows she’s “damn attractive”? Hearing how stunningly good looking Crystal (not to mention almost every character) thought herself, every other page became obnoxious and exhausting. For one thing- being in the main character’s head was…challenging. While there were certainly enjoyable parts, there were others that kept throwing me off. But overall I think the writing was okay, and it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book.) And I'm not a native English speaker and only took the mandatory basic classes in school/college, but even to me 'walked passed' seems wrong. (Oh, and for those who care about this, it does need a bit of editing, examples: the narrative is in the first person, past tense, but a few times it changed to present, such as 'The first thing that I’m going to buy when I get a job (.)', 'When I get myself together, I’ll see if I could get him (.)'. It's open-ended, but thankfully it doesn't have a cliffhanger! I liked it enough to want to read the sequel when/if it comes out. And predictability about the plot aside, it was overall very entertaining. They had this kind of hate-love-hate relationship that extended throughout most of the story, and I really enjoyed it. However, I loved the dynamic between Crystal and Alveya. So there was a lot of 'what am I? What are you? What's happening?'. And it kind of got on my nerves that even 80% into the book no one was telling her anything about anything, her questions always ignored. oh, but I think I'm average looking' attitude. Some of what happened made me roll my eyes, to be honest, and Crystal kind of annoyed me in the beginning with her 'I'm blond, have crystal-blue eyes, a great body, and I'm considered one of the prettiest girls in school, I'm used to girls getting jealous of me. So for most of the book we follow 18-year-old Crystal wanting/trying to find out just what's going on, what's behind her mother's brutal murder, and what's the deal with this odd and intriguing classmate named Alveya, who for some reason seems to despise Crystal. As readers, we already know there are supernatural creatures, in the blurb there's even a mention of vampires. well, she doesn't know, but she starts to suspect people around her aren't just humans. This one is of course an Urban Fantasy, in which the main character is. I loooove books with supernatural creatures. But following Amazon's rating system, 4 stars 'I like it', is more accurate)
